Visualizing Ultimate Loss Components

Michelle Bradley, ACAS, MAAA, ARM, CERA, CCIS, Consulting Actuary and Enoch Starnes, ACI, Actuarial Consultant

SIGMA is pleased to announce that an updated version of one of our most popular educational resources, the Loss Map graphic, is now available. As part of the revision process, this one-page document has been expanded to include helpful definitions for the components involved in estimating ultimate losses. If you’re unfamiliar with this resource, below are a few of its key uses:

  • Visualizing the flow of how each component builds to an ultimate loss estimate
  • Isolating the components obtained from a loss run versus those derived through actuarial analytics
  • Detailing the two components of IBNR

Of course, the Loss Map is just one of the many documents and videos found in our complimentary RISK66 education portal. For a fantastic companion piece to this updated resource, consider downloading our newly revised booklet, An Actuarial Advantage.
